Course Description


  1. Introduction. Historical overview, Financial Issues, Development of S.C., System Organization, Orbit Types, Applications – Services – ESA – the RCL-AUTh projects
  2. Radio-link Analysis. Antenna parameters, Propagation in real conditions, Noise and SNR at the receiver input, Design limitations: Influence of the propagation media and mitigation – Regulations – Functional limitations, Overall link performance, Interference.
  3. Baseband signals and Quality of Service (QoS). Digital Telephony, Television – DVB-S, Radio – DAB, Data, Performance objectives, Service availability, Time Delay
  4. Communication Techniques. Digital Transmission, Encryption – Channel encoding – Energy dispersion – Modulation, Error Probability, Spectral Efficiency, Decoding and Error Correction
  5. Multiple Access. Call Traffic, Throughput of a Multiple Access Technique, FDMA, TDMA, CDMA, Fixed and On-demand assignment, Random Access.
  6. Multibeam Satellite Networks. Multibeam satellites (frequency re-use, Interconnection techniques), Scanning beam interconnection, Intersatellite links (ISL)
  7. Regenerative satellites. Radiolink via a regenerative satellite, Onboard processing, Switching
  8. Communication Payload. Operation and characteristics, Repeater organization, Antenna coverage and technical characteristics, HELLASAT
