Course Description


  1. Introduction to Optical Communications (3 hours): Introductory concepts, basic link components, economic data, technological developments
  2. Optical Fibers (9 hours): Propagation (Geometrical Optics Approach – Wave Optics Theory), Types of optical fibers and Characteristics, Optical signal degradation (Attenuation, Dispersion, Nonlinear Effects), Connections
  3. Passive Optical Network Components (6 hours): Optical Cables, Light Emitters, Signal Modulation, Photodetectors
  4. Repeaters (4 hours): Optical Amplifiers, Fiber Amplifiers
  5. Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) (2 hours): Basic principles and implementation techniques
  6. Optical Communication Networks (3 hours): Network categories, Network organization, Transparency
  7. Network Parameters and Quality Control (6 hours): Optical Communication System Design – Measurements with OTDR.
  8. Laboratory exercise (4 hours): Study of optical links using an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR)
  9. Presentation of assignments (2 hours)
